The Naming of ‘The Fine’ For 40 years all I knew was that their sailing boat ‘The Fine’ name came from a poem or song. He would always correct me, with his teachers look, if I said it wrong without ‘The’ before ‘Fine’. With his passing I got curious about these memories and discovered why and realised the thought and thinking both he and Mum had gone through…. We twa hae run about the braes (hillsides) And pu'd (pulled) the gowans fine But we've wander'd mony a weary fit (foot) Sin days of auld lang syne Auld Lang Syne – Robert Burns Apparently in medieval English ‘gowan’ was the name for wildflowers, most likely yellow or white daisies.
